Your First Yoga Retreat?

If you haven’t heard of yoga retreats, where have you been hiding? From megastars like Gwenyth and Oprah to the barista that makes your triple-shot latte every morning, everyone seems to be keen to try a yoga retreat at least once. Thinking of giving it a go, but worried you’re not bendy enough or that you’ll be stuck eating nothing but kale for a week? We’re here to reassure you and give you the inside scoop on what to expect from your first yoga retreat.

You don’t have to be able to put your legs behind your head. Yoga retreats cater for all skill levels, ages and body types. Plus, one of the great things about yoga is it’s not a competition, which means you can go at your own pace. If you’re still uncertain, look for retreats aimed at beginners. You can also find retreats for just women or just men, different age groups, pregnancy yoga, family retreats… there’s something out there perfect for you!

Yoga isn’t the only option. While the retreats do focus on yoga, chances are you’ll only actually be doing yoga a couple times a day. The rest of the time will be devoted to whatever other activities are on offer. This could include things like cooking classes, breathwork (known as “pranayama”), walks in nature, or even things like surfing and kayaking!

It won’t be all rabbit food. While most retreats do serve mostly vegetarian or vegan meals, you won’t be stuck with nothing but salad all day. Most of these retreats are catered by experienced chefs who pride themselves on providing a tasty selection of healthy, organic, and most importantly delicious food for you to enjoy. Use this as a chance to expand your food horizons!

Make the most of a digital detox. We all know that we’re probably more attached to our phones and tech than we should be, and most yoga retreats encourage you to log off and unplug from digital life. It might sound scary at first to detach from your socials, but if you can commit yourself to spending time away from the digital dimension, you’ll feel less stress and anxiety and be able to enjoy your retreat that much more.

It’s not a cult. If you think you’ll be sitting around all day chanting in Sanskrit or praying to gurus, think again. (Although if that’s what you’re after, you can find those types of retreats too!) Yoga is not a religion – it’s a set of practices to help you become healthier, mentally and physically. You can even find Christian yoga retreats if you’re worried about what your pastor might think! Simply put, yoga is for anyone who wants to embrace a healthier lifestyle and connect with themselves on a deeper level – no prayer beads or chanting required.

You’ll make new friends. If you’re nervous about going solo to your first yoga retreat, you have nothing to worry about. When people come together for a common goal, whether that’s learning how to do the perfect downward dog or just to be a bit healthier, bonds are made. You’ll start the retreat as strangers, but by the end, you might just have a new crew of besties!

With so many benefits for your physical health and mental wellbeing, yoga is something everyone should try at least once. A yoga retreat is the perfect opportunity to learn more about this ancient practice as well as give yourself a chance to nourish and recharge yourself.
